Gabriel Orozco ließ sich von dem Münsteraner Jahrmarkt, Send genannt, und dessen Geschichte zu seinem Projekt "Riesenrad, zur Hälfte im Boden versenkt" anregen. Der Markt wurde bereits im 16. Jahrhundert als Begleiterscheinung der zweimal im Jahr stattfindenden bischöflichen Synode zu einer festen Institution. Heute ist der Markt auf das Vergnügungselement reduziert, der seine Attraktion als Kirmes jedoch behalten hat. Mit dem Projektvorschlag "Riesenrad, zur Hälfte im Boden versenkt" spielt Orozco auf diese Münsteraner Geschichte an. Die monumentale Installation überführt das Moment der Vergnügung in eine tiefsinnige Anspielung auf das Rad der Fortuna und auf die Polaritäten von Hell und Dunkel, Leben und Tod, Himmel und Erde ...

Gabriel Orozco's fancy was caught by the Münster fair, which is known as "Send." His project proposal "Ferris wheel, partially sunken in the ground" was the result. In the 16th-century the fair was already solidly established as an embellishment to the episcopal synod which met twice a year. Today, the fair has been reduced to some basic entertainment elements, retaining its attraction as an amusement park. In his project proposal "Ferris wheel, partially sunken in the ground," Orozco refers to this part of Münster's history. The monumental installation conveys a deeper allusion to the moment of pleasure, indirectly referring to the wheel of fortune and the polarities of light and dark, life and death, heaven and earth...
